houses near the sea

Residence in Lagkadi

description

This house is located in a small island of the Dodecanese in Greece, Nissyros. It is located in the oldest neighbourhood of the island, Laggadi. The house was built on the traces of the old one. Only one internal wall was able to be preserved, in the common room.

It is a three-storey house with a traditional stone-constructed ground floor, with a visterna, a water tank of rainwater, and a stone-built bed. The first floor hosts the kitchen, the common room, the main bathroom, and a traditional wooden balcony. The bedrooms, two of them, are found on the last floor, along with a small w.c. and the domatsi, traditional built terrace.

Due to the hypsometrical difference of the two narrow streets that surround it, two entrances were made. One entrance is on the common room of the first floor and another one on the ground floor. A stone-built courtyard leads to the latter, which was constructed aiming to preserve all the traditional elements of the neighbourhood; the steep, narrow staircase with the landing, and the mosaic flooring.

The interior of the house was designed according to the needs of the owners and its orientation, which defines the views. There was a great consideration to the air circulation as well as to avoid future addition of air-condition.

The colour chosen for the exterior is an earthly one close to the sulphur, a reference to the volcanic nature of the island. This colour fits perfectly the local stone and the old Enetian Castle that domains on the neighborhood. The openings are painted the traditional green of the olive.
